Collaborative Painting

Painting with friends

I'm suddenly seeking investors. To get the canvasses and their shipping/storage cases made, I'm expecting to pay approximately $100 US each.

To insure we have 100 painted canvasses ready to show, we may need about 120 manufactured, so we need about $12,000., with a few hundred dollars more to cover all the shipping.

We may end up having to pay for storage before it get exhibited, so I don't know, maybe $15,000. total if we don't have to store it for a long time. We would like the painting to sell at it's first exhibition, but of course, we can't depend on it.

This cost is designed to be covered by the leader's 40% share of the what we receive from the sale. If the 40% of the proceeds is equal the estimated costs ($15,000.). then the total received from a gallery sale would have to be $37, 500. Generally speaking, for the artist to receive that amount, the selling price would have to be $75,000.

While the work will certainly be worth that and more, first time work by a group without an exhibition/collection history, it may be difficult to get that.

Any ideas on how to keep cost down are welcome.

hey p0ps, i think it would be wise to adapt to a cheaper mode of production. Loose canvas is very cheap to mail anywhere. I would suggest that contributors supply their little pieces of canvas themselves, or you buy some canvas and cut it up into 100 slightly over sized pieces. but really, it's so cheap, i don't see why each participant can't buy a little themselves. so really, you've gone from $12,000.00 to free. then, when people are finished with their pieces, they send them to you. you make a frame, stretch some canvas in it, and then glue all your pieces onto it. bam! done.

whoa! I knew there was an answer! that might be it, altho I was really attached to the individual canvasses each in their own cases, u know. well. maybe later. I'll rethink the dimensions on this -- I can't deal with a single canvas that big.

tnx, mang

Anyone else have thoughts on the scale, canvas, financing issues?

I like the idea of supplying our own canvasses, if that would reduce the cost... if they were a standard, easily available size, so much the better :-)

Great! I'll calculate a standard size that'll work and see if everyone has access to it.
